How to Build a Gallery Wall

Let's face it, winter is beautiful and amazing and cold! It is easy to get cabin fever. It is also a great time to tackle those household projects you haven't had time for. In this post I am going to discuss how to build a gallery wall. You can do this using your favorite art pieces, family photos as well as architectural pieces that you love. Which leads me to our first step.

Step number one: choose your theme. Don't be afraid to play with color, levels and be creative. Your wall should be an expression of who you are, not a mimicry of some else.

Step number two: Draw it out. This initial plan may change, but it gives you a good jumping off point and helps you visualize the space

Step number three: Clear a space on your floor to create your layout. Choose your centerpiece first. This will be your focal point and set the tone for your wall, then you can build out from there.

Step number four: Variety is your friend. Different shapes and sizes help to add visual interest by creating depth and dimension. Be sure to maintain an overall balance. About 2 inches (give or take) between each frame is ideal.

Step number five: Consider the wall itself. Have you ever noticed the walls in a museum or gallery? Wall color plays a key role in the way art and photographs look. Using wall color to highlight accent colors can create interest and add drama.

Step number six: Put it on the wall. Make sure you have all the necessary tools and that you have measured, etc before hanging everything up. A good rule of thumb is to hang your centerpiece at eye level, but don't be afraid to break the rules and adapt for furniture or other items. To protect walls and your photographs use frame hangers, which are sturdier than traditional wall hangers. Felt disks applied to the back of frames can help prevent scratches and nicks. For a damage free hang, choose command strips or similar brand adhesive strips for lighter items. These also make mistakes easy to fix.

Now stand back and admire your handy work!
